“In the Spotlight” is a new page for the JACB website.  Each month, we feature selected members from our talented group of musicians and give them a chance to toot their own horn.

April Spotlight Shines on George Stutzman

George has played clarinet with Jackson Area Community Concert Band for at least five years.

"My interest in playing instruments began when Bobby Newton came to Malesus Elementary [School] many years ago to introduce Tonettes to sixth-graders."  The Tonette was a type of recorder.  When Mr. Newton began recruiting players for the beginning band program, George chose to play clarinet.

George continued playing clarinet in high school and college, and holds a BSE and an MME in Music Education.  From 1979-1980, he was the Graduate Assistant on Clarinet at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.  He also played in the Northeast Arkansas Symphony during that time.

Since the 1980s, George has performed on clarinet and tenor sax in a number of musical theatre productions by the Jackson Theatre Guild.  He also enjoys playing flute in the Music Ministry of his church, Family Worship Center, in Jackson.   Currently, George teaches Elementary Music at Camden Elementary School in Camden, Tenn., where he has been on staff for about five years.
